“I have certainly grown as a result of the Path to Leadership Lab. My interactions with the instructors and other members of my cohort were crucial to my growth. One very important element was seeing deeper into the minds of other members of my cohort, all successful, ambitious people who had strengths and weaknesses like me. It added to my confidence that I am not alone in my doubts, nor in my ability to grow and learn. Nor am I alone in caring deeply about my work and wanting to fit in my family and community. I also recognized that ARS is a wonderful workplace.”

2. Understanding the Hardwiring of Self and Others through Temperament Analysis
Temperament is a model for determining personality strengths and limitations that was developed by the ancient Greeks and is still in use today throughout the world. With 4 basic Temperaments to learn most people can master the art of determining Temperament simply by observing the behavior of others. Leaders can benefit from knowing how others prefer to operate by adopting different management and communication styles that suit others best. In this 2-day workshop participants will:
Methodology: During the two day workshop, we will share conflict theory, provide a survey of conflict styles, introduce experiential activities to draw forth participants reactions to conflict, share case studies raised by participants, and use the Breakthrough Process to uncover limiting beliefs about conflict. Participants will leave with a practice plan aimed at changing behavior.

We will present a methodology for identifying the Temperaments of others and provide several opportunities to practice on each other. Participants will leave with a practice that focuses on observation and identification of Temperament in others.
3. Team Development
Despite the emphasis on our time around working in teams, the truth is that few have mastered the art and science of actually leading healthy, productive teams. The answer can be found in learning various disciplines, protocols and processes that have been proven to support and encourage good teamwork. As in the world of sports, good teams don’t just materialize; they are grown and developed by focused leaders who cultivate those teams.
Prior to the start of the workshop, GLI will assess the participants to determine their personal leadership needs. The 2-day workshop content will be designed according to those areas in which the participants see as most challenging. We have complied a menu of options that we believe are important to healthy, highly functioning teams. Many of the topics below create greater trust amongst employees and with high trust come greater collaboration and teamwork.
- Meeting Management
- Team Agreements and Accountability
- Decision Making
- Creating a feedback rich environment
- Welcoming and harnessing disagreement and resistance
- Deepening communication skills with emphasis on listening
- Strategic questioning as a tool to build capacity in others
Methodology: Prior to the start of the two-day workshop, we will use an assessment tool to determine participant’s needs. During the session, we will discuss theory and protocols, and provide activities, which will allow participants to gain first hand experience. Participants will leave with a practice that focuses on an observation or an actual plan that targets their unit’s teambuilding needs.
4. Managing Change and Coping with Transitions
Given the complex and fast paced requirements of today’s workplace, change is not only a constant, but it is accelerating. Without attention to the process of assisting people in making those changes, there is a strong tendency for workers to resist or even worse undermine change efforts. Leaders need to be comfortable managing the external organizational elements of change and the internal, human responses to transition. In this 2-day workshop participants will:
- Clarify the dynamics of change and transition
- Review and understand the emotional process of transition
- Undergo a personal assessment of reactions to change
- Understand the dynamics of change and transition through the lens of the 4 Temperaments
- Develop strategies to manage a group’s internal process or transition that accompanies any change effort
Methodology: During the two-day workshop, we will present the latest theories and models of change and transition along with information on the emotional impact of transition. We provide opportunities to role-play and discuss case studies that provide real time examples of leading a team or organization through change and transition. Participants will leave with a practice that focuses on an observation or an actual plan that targets a specific change effort.
5. Negotiation
In our current environment that tends to polarize quickly, few seem able to get beyond fixed positions that deadlock and have to be resolved by referring the issues to higher levels. Having a greater understanding of interest based negotiation gives leaders an effective tool for developing win/win solutions to what are often seen as intractable situations. In this 2-day workshop participants will:
- Learn an interest based negotiation process developed by Roger Fisher and William Ury from the Harvard Negotiation Project
- Recognize the differences between positional and interest-based negotiation processes, along with the costs and benefits of each
- Learn the fundamentals of interest-based negotiation
- Identify when and how to use interest-based negotiation strategies
- Develop strategies and facilitate others to use an interest-based negotiation process as opposed to fighting over positions
- Uncover internal resistance to successful win/win negotiating
Methodology: During the two-day workshop, participants will explore Emotional Intelligence theory, under go an EI self-assessment and take part in experiential activities that deepen EI awareness. Participants will leave with a practice geared towards refining specific EI competencies.
